Create an organic lawn

Think you can’t have an amazing garden without using chemicals? I’m going to blow that out of the water. You can have an amazing beautiful patio that will amaze your chemically treated neighbors! I’m sure you’ve seen an overtreated chemical yard before. It turns brown because they put too much down. With organic lawns, you will never see that. It cannot be overtreated with organic products. A chemically treated patio wreaks havoc on our environment. You do not need insecticides, herbicides and fungicides to have a beautiful lawn.

Many of the chemicals that we put on our lawn are not even used by our lawn. A scary fact is that 40-60% of the nitrogen in fertilizers runs off or leaches out and ends up in groundwater or surface water. In the US alone, between 60 and 70 million birds die each year from pesticide poisoning. Chemical fertilizers can do a lot of damage to your soil. They kill living organisms, beneficial insects, and bacterial populations that help keep your soil healthy. In fact, they cause an overgrowth of harmful bacteria.

We have the wrong mindset when it comes to our lawn. We think we should be treating our grass, when in fact, we should be treating our soil. If our soil is healthy, our grass will be healthy. Using worm tea is a great way to create healthy soil. Earthworm tea adds bacteria, fungi, acinomycetes, and protozoa to the soil. Beneficial aerobic bacteria, fungi, protozoa, inoculants, and nematodes help with greater root depth and spread, better disease and pest resistance, and healthier, more resilient plants. Outperforms chemical fertilizers. The worm tea is created from worm humus that is made in an aerobic oxygenation process that causes a prolific growth of beneficial aerobic microorganisms and eliminates the harmful ones. The microorganisms in the worm tea cause increased plant growth, healthier plants, more resistant to diseases and pests, larger fruits and vegetables, and increased production. Now that’s what I call an organic win!

You have to be patient when switching to an organic lawn. It’s not perfect overnight. It will take time to help remove all the harmful chemicals you’ve treated it with in the past. In the long run, it will all be worth it. You’ll be helping the environment and saving money by not having to buy all those harmful chemicals. It’s a great idea to monitor your lawn. When the grass is thick and healthy, weeds cannot grow. It is better to do this in the fall. Sprinkling your lawn with worm tea will help your soil become healthier and your plants will have a deeper root system, therefore using less water. Mowing the lawn at the proper height is also a great way to maintain a healthy lawn. Put your mower blade on the highest setting and make sure your blades are sharp. Don’t bag your clippings. Leaving them on your lawn adds valuable organic matter to the soil and about 2 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet each season. Now, get out there and create the perfect organic lawn for both you and the environment!
