‘Why the CLEEN Foundation is retraining police officers in criminal justice deliveries’

Again, the foundation has come out to explain why it is embarking on police officer retraining, in the country with a population of over 200 million people and an estimated police workforce of a paltry 370 police officers, nationwide. .

The truth is that CLEEN is preaching its gospel of a safer environment for people living or doing business in our beloved country in every state of the federation.

Nigeria is wounded with abundant human and material resources. But, the riot called corruption is almost killing the country. Muhammadu Buhari, the President of Nigeria is doing his best, no doubt.

But, says CLEEN in the area of ​​security, the current escalation of criminal incidents and multiple reports of non-compliance with laws and human rights violations by the police, are some of the reasons, CLEEN Foundation, a non-governmental organization undertook on the recent two-day retraining of police officers from the southwestern region of Nigeria.

Bless Abiri, the head of the Foundation in Lagos, while speaking on behalf of Dr. Benson Olugbuo, the CEO, made this revelation during a two-day training workshop, organized by CLEEN and held simultaneously in Lagos and Abuja.

Abiri said that, as guardians, the police require continuous training and retraining on the provisions of the 2015 Criminal Justice Administration Act (ACJA), which is designed to preserve and strengthen existing legal frameworks across the country.

His words: “Some of the 26 out of 36 states in Nigeria that have adopted the Act include: Lagos, Ogun, Anambra, Kwara, Oyo, Jigawa, Plateau, Nassarawa, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Bauchi, Kano, Ekiti and Kogui “.

According to her, the public perception survey carried out in 2017 and 2018 by the revealed foundation on the Law revealed a low level of awareness among the police and other government institutions charged with the responsibilities of monitoring the administration of the Law.

Based on these findings, the foundation in its commitment to support the police embarked on the recent 2-day retraining workshop, in Lagos, Abuja.

It is noted that more than 20 senior police officers from the states of the south-western region of Nigeria attended the training at the CLEEN Foundation secretariat in Ojodu, Lagos, while Abiri also confirmed that about 30 senior police officers from the northern region were also on standby at the Abuja headquarters.

An Oyo State Deputy Superintendent of Police, speaking off the record to the Nigerian Tribune, expressed his thanks to the foundation for the training, noting that he will pass on the knowledge gained in the future.
