How do I track clients’ personal training?

Hi all! I’m going to talk about why following up with your clients is one of the most powerful ways to build your business and get life-changing results for your clients. Then I will show you what to track and how to track it easily.

This is a question that I see quite a bit on forums, and I’ve even seen some videos taunting of trainers tracking their clients’ workouts and walking around the gym with a client information folder!

Here’s the deal. Tracking customer information is one of the BEST ways to keep your customers motivated, happy, and looking for their wallet!

Here are the key things to track and why:

1- Body measurements – Yes, they can squirm when you take them for the first time (you may also feel uncomfortable, but get over it, they will feel your discomfort and feel ashamed). Our job is to show them the mirror of truth, so they can see it well and help them make a change for the better. They will be motivated when they first come in, but that motivation will die if they don’t see some results quickly enough. Tracking their body measurements will show them that they have moved in the right direction (hard for them to notice at first), which will keep them motivated.

Possible Trap: While body fat is more important than weight to track, most body fat devices have a large margin for error and additionally human error if you are using a caliper. Instead, keep track of your girth measurements (a smaller margin of error, you need to take it from the same place each time) by measuring your body parts, which will show them that they are moving in the right direction, regardless of scale. 2- Program / training follow-up: this is essential to create a continuous cycle of results! This will ensure that your workouts are always fresh, show the client that you care about them and think about them when you’re not together (they’ll want to reciprocate and make you proud), and help you design programs that avoid deadlocks. lowers the risk of injury and keeps things interesting.

Possible catch: don’t get stuck in a routine with the same exercise over and over again, and keep all your information organized and secure, all medical information you know about your clients should be kept confidential, so lose your folder or sheets it’s a big no no! Also, stay focused on the customer, not looking at or searching their portfolio!

Sneaky Tool – Not only do you need to keep track of their workouts with you, but it’s also critical to have them report on their solo workouts to help them empower and take responsibility for themselves. Many coaches worry that if they create a program and encourage the client to train on their own, the client will quit. It is quite the opposite! They will get better results, they will thank you, and they will want to come back for more. Empowering them and giving them the ability to exercise is the most valuable thing you can give them. Remember, no matter how good the program you give them, they will get used to it and will need a new program / stimulus to keep their body moving in the right direction. Also, remember that the brain, although only 2% of body mass, consumes 20% of the energy consumed. Many of our clients go on autopilot when they come to train with us, they’ve had a long day at work and they don’t want to think. But getting them to think will not only burn more calories, but it will also make sure they remember what they have learned, so they can do it on their own (and by keeping track of their solo workouts, you will force them to use that information for their account, so they’ll really remember! I’ve been using Google Docs Spreadsheet to keep track of my clients’ workouts, a super powerful yet easy way to make sure they’re engaged!

3- Goal tracking: critical! If you don’t define your goal, how will you know when you’ve achieved it? The more specific the goal, the clearer it will be in the customer’s mind and the easier it will be for them to achieve it. As they train with you, their goals will evolve.

Of course, there are other tools and applications that you can use to help track your customers. These will get you started and help you make empowerment (and success) a cornerstone of your business! One of the keys to success is taking advantage of the amazing tools that already exist and creating your own system.
