“God’s love reminds me of the fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control),” says 10-year-old Josh. “God gives us our fruit so that we can have good attitudes all day long. Once we have given all our fruit, we become really edible. All we have to do is ask God for more fruit.”
Josh, I’m afraid sometimes when friends look for peaches, strawberries, or mangoes in my life, they get lemons.
“God’s love is when you come home from school and your dog jumps up and licks you,” says 7-year-old Taylor. No jumping for Ann’s dog: “Love is when my dog jumps ‘on’ me when I come home,” says 7-year-old Ann.
Whether jumping or hopping, dogs are the clear winners among the animals nominated for best expressing God’s love. I’m sure God would be glad if our love and devotion for him were as sincere as that of Taylor and Ann’s dogs. Do you ever get excited about God? Does your face ever show it?
“Love is patient,” says 7-year-old Caroline. “Love is kind. Love is in everyone all the time.”
Try everyone, says William, 9: “God’s love reminds me of a circle because it never ends. It also reminds me of an airplane because it lifts me up when I’m down. God’s love reminds me of a warm night by the fire because it makes me hot”.
Molly, 9, has another take on warming up: “My goodness reminds me of a mom who makes cookies and hot chocolate when you get home from playing in the snow.”
Moms show God’s love in other ways, says 8-year-old Chris: “God gave my mom the will to help my dad meet God. My mom also led me to meet God.”
Is there a greater gift of love that a mother could give? The gift she continues to give is eternal life, a relationship with God through her Son.
Stacy’s mom knows how to make her feel special: “God’s love reminds me of my mom because every time she comes home from work, she kisses me and says, ‘I love you so much.'”
Don’t forget dad, says Ross: “God’s love reminds me of my dad because he works hard downtown.”
Downtown or uptown, remember God on special occasions, says 9-year-old Alina: “God’s love reminds me of a birthday cake. The candles remind me when God lights the way. The icing reminds me of how sweet and generous He is. The bread part reminds me of the Last Supper because they had bread and wine.”
