Drano pregnancy test: the truth behind the myth

When you are pregnant, it seems that people come out of the woodwork with stories and tales of how you can tell if you are pregnant with a boy or a girl. Sometimes it can be amazing to hear some of these amazing pregnancy myths. But, without a doubt, the strangest method is the Drano pregnancy test. This one has been around for years.

The story behind the drano gender test is that you can determine the gender of any baby by mixing the drano drain cleaner and the urine of a pregnant woman during the fourth month of pregnancy. Let’s take a closer look at this and find out the truth behind this myth, although I think we all have a good idea by now!

First of all … I DO NOT recommend anyone to try this method. Besides being a totally bogus method of determining the sex of your baby, it can also produce toxic fumes that can be quite dangerous for anyone, let alone a woman who is pregnant. Common sense should tell you that this is not something to be tried and hopefully this article will help put a stop to this.

The Drano Pregnancy Test Recipe

To perform the drano / draino test, you are instructed to have the following supplies on hand:

Crystal Drano – 2 tablespoons

A quart glass jar that you can throw away later.

3 ounces of urine given in the morning hours

Scoop everything out and put the 2 tablespoons of drano into the quart jar. Then add the urine and back off. Apparently the fumes are atrocious! Give it time for everything to mix.

Now when everything has been mixed together, you can see what color it has become. These are the colors they say will determine gender.

If it’s brown, black, or dark blue … it’s a boy

If it is clear, green or blue … it is a girl

Once you are done with the test, you are supposed to get rid of the mixture right away. It’s probably a good idea since you can only imagine what it smells like.

There is NO anecdotal evidence to support the accuracy of this test. The funny thing about this pregnancy myth is the fact that the colors change with each person who tells the story.

So what is the truth about the drano pregnancy test? It doesn’t work and it can be dangerous to try. It is best to have an ultrasound to help determine if you are pregnant with a boy or a girl. This is a myth that simply needs to be buried permanently.
