Are you finding your kitchen too small?

Tips to maximize kitchen space

Learn how to use your kitchen space efficiently

Many of you probably have kitchens that are very small and probably littered with trash and virtually no space to prepare your meals. Maybe you have a ton of cookbooks that you can’t put down when you don’t need them. Some tips may help.

cabinets

The cabinets in your kitchen are the key storage unit. Use your cabinets and drawers wisely. With a little organization, you can make the most of your cabinet space. Here are some tips for using your cabinet space efficiently.

1. Large cabinets with shelves above the countertop are primarily for your stoneware. Stoneware includes your plates, saucers, bowls, cups, bowls, and glasses. Use the shelves wisely. Stack your large plates together in one corner of the cabinet rack. Usually, your large plates are quite large, taking up an entire corner on one of your cabinet shelves.

Keep in mind that the furniture in your kitchen is intended for the stoneware that you use on a daily basis. It’s not the place to store your fine china or the things you normally reserve for dinner when you have guests over for special occasions. These items should not be stored in the kitchen, but in a display case in the dining room.

Similarly, the saucers and cups that go in your kitchen cabinets should be the ones you use every day. Keep everything organized. Place large plates in one corner of the shelf, small plates and saucers in another corner, and cups, bowls, and glasses in another. This way you will know where everything is and you will not have to search for everything.

2. The Lazy Susan is a must in the kitchen. If she doesn’t have one, she must have one installed. You can also find Lazy Susan inserts that can fit perfectly in your under-counter and pantry cabinets. You can even find lazy Susans that fit on individual shelves in the pantry.

The Lazy Susan is a great way to manage space in lower cabinets under the counter. The Lazy Susan is either a cabinet with rotating circular shelves or a stand with a free rotating shelf. Eliminates the need to rummage through your pantry to find that can of soup, spices, rice, etc. All you need to do is store things on the rotating shelf and rotate it until you find what you’re looking for.

3. The cabinet under the kitchen sink should not be used for food storage. Traditionally, the cabinet under the kitchen sink has always been reserved for household detergents, plungers, oven cleaners, etc.

I understand that those of you with young children may be concerned that children might get into some of these detergents, many of which are highly toxic. If you store detergents under the kitchen sink, as many do, look for a small padlock and chain strong enough to close that cabinet when your small children are around.

Store your cookbooks and recipes

Some of you have many cookbooks or different recipes that you have accumulated over the years or that you use to prepare meals for special occasions. If you have an open top refrigerator with no cabinets above it, you should take two bookends and place your cookbooks on top of the refrigerator.

Otherwise, wherever you have wall space in your kitchen, install a shelf or set of shelves for your cookbooks. For recipe cards, there are many boxes and Rolodexes that are made especially for recipes. You can store all your recipe cards neatly in one easy to get to area.

counter space

Your counter space is also very important. Try to keep most of your counter space free of any objects. If you have some kitchen appliances, like a mixer, food processor, etc. keep them in a remote corner on your counter out of the way of general cooking.

Now you have some tips on how to manage your kitchen space.
